warming up to the cold

Dear friends,

I wanted to say thank you for your kind words, i have read them many times and have felt the warmth from them.

I am sitting in the upstairs loft, Poet and all les animaux are sound asleep and all i can hear is the wind playing with the leaves of the birch trees.  I am not comfortable up here yet, my new computer arrived and it took me a week to finally open the box and set it up, and now i type this to you. I have big plans for this space where the heat rises from the wood stove. it is where Poet and i will retreat to on very cold days so i must make it perfect, well our kind of perfect anyways.

The cold has made it's way to the hill. My love for winter does not fade, especially when it snows but i must admit that the transition from Autumn to Winter scares me at first for i still have a barn to fill with hay, wood too arrive and a driveway that looks like a dried up river bed to contend with. Once those things are in place then i am ready, ready for big wool sweaters, a fire that never goes out, big cast iron pots of lentils, soups and stews. showing Poet the snow, putting on tiny wool hats and mitts, teaching her how to catch snowflakes with the tip of her tongue and reading books by the warmth of the sun on the window panes....  i love her so very much, so very- very much.

Living in Southern California I would face harsh ridicule for saying I thrive during the winter months, but I do. Of course I must travel to experience the 30 below temps, but the romance of it all warms my very core. When the time comes to branch out on my own I am afraid of the choice I will face... the call of the ocean is every bit as powerful as the beckoning of the snow flurries that send my soul into a frenzy.

May I say that I know the love of a mother who loves so very-very much, and it is the greatest gift that one could receive. To have that special place that follows you wherever you go, to know that comfort, to feel so special in the eyes of one so dear is truly amazing, and while I am grateful beyond belief for this precious gift it makes me sad/guilty that not all children are loved this way. I am so glad you two found each other.

It's amazing how much the blessing of a new little soul in our arms can change us forever. Just when you think your heart can't get any bigger, you learn a whole new kind of love, one that takes you to the moon and back.

I know you love the hill with all your being and heart, and Poet is one very blessed little girl to be there with you, to learn from you and grow up in such a beautiful place. You sound very content and happy...I hope you both grow to love your perfect loft space together.

and I hope you come back here often...I miss hearing and seeing what's going on up there on the hill. Everything you write moves me in such a peaceful way.

i too am feeling not ready yet … and afraid of winter … still missing wood and the clean up of my garden is not done … but then when the snow has its white blanket spread over the land … it will be so peaceful and beautiful. I wish you and your lovely Poet a very happy, healthy, cozy and wonderful winter!

It's always a bit daunting for me to realize Winter is on the way.
Eventually, I begin to flow with the colder temps. and snow. It truly is a beautiful season for reflection and inner growth.
How wonderful that you have little Poet to share this cozy season with.
Best to you

First of all, Congratulations on the arrival of Poet, you will spend many happy wintery days together, learning to speak to each other. That being said, I instantly related to your mention of the chores to be done before the snow flies, I too burn wood and have only just begun to start stacking it in the garage to keep it dry. There are always so many chores to do around the yard before winter, here in the Great White North...like close the pond, rake the leaves, close the rain barrel, rake the leaves, plant winter garlic and the one I've been putting off, is attaching the storm windows on the porch, as well as, did I mention raking leaves? Anyway, all the best to You and Poet...must go, I can hear the rake calling me.../*\/*\

How very precious: the first snowflake on Poet’s tongue and each thereafter, the loft's warmth and the books you will read there, the soups which will nourish, the light of the sun on the panes, the peacefulness of the hill in winter…. Sounds like a dream come true for two blessed girls and their loved ones.

The transition to winter, I have yet to meet with open arms. I do respond to the invitation to cozy up and slow down. Just returned from a day’s adventure, another large truck load of firewood has been obtained; too tired, too content to say much more. Bless you, dear Nadia.

i love everything about your post. My love for winter is strongest when i come inside from a long walk and my cheeks are frozen to my teeth. You and Poet will have a wonderful first winter together. Can't wait to see her catching snowflakes on her tongue.

Brave and honest as always. I too love winter, though as I've just moved to Boston I'm told I'll have to contend with it more than I'm used to. I hope your first with Poet will be magical.

I wish I could describe the conflicting emotions the change in the seasons gives rise to in me quite so well! Beautifully put and here's wishing you and Poet a cosy and beautiful winter.

I can hear the joy and total contentment in your words when you speak of the fog, but also of your special blessing, Poet. Enjoy this precious time together making memories. Sharon
