gathering of things

i love when holiday preparation begins. my mind begins to think about packaging, it's funny to think about it but i always know how i will package items before knowing what the item itself will be. I like making a baking list and pulling out holiday things i have gathered while strolling. I love the simple things and the traditions that i have created. i love changing the garden urns from autumn things to evergreens and berries.. my love for red in the house always helps with the holiday decorating which this year will include my spiral staircase ....i would love to hear your favorite holiday preparation..

I'm terrible at holidays. There is such pressure to recreate some form of magic. It never lives up to my own expectation. Also it feels so forced and artificial in the stores. Maybe reading blogs will change things for me this year. I'm hoping.

holiday preparations for me back in sydney are about opening the door to my parent's attic, pulling down the makeshift ladder and crawling up to the hot darkness looking for my box of handcrafted decorations. I'm excited to whisper to you that I will be going home for christmas this year :-) shhhhh. xx

PS Corine, we must get your holiday decorating spirits in motion!

I have a mini-Christmas village I love to put out. I don't let myself do it until the day after Thanksgiving though! Right now, I'm itching to do it!

My favorite holiday thing was back home when we ould unwrap all the elements of the Nativity scene. In Provence where I am from the making of the tiny characters is a real arts and crafts guild and we collected many along the years so having my parents trust us with unwrapping each element was truly a gift.
A few years back, we started a new tradition in the neighborhood, no matter where we live, at 11.45pm on the 24th we go outside and light up votives in decorative paper bags along the main road so that when people come home later that night they have that little extra whimsical feeling. We feel like little elves!
I am with you on packaging...I am a sucker for packages! Love the white and the red!

Je fais un arbre naturel à chaque année, j'adore l'odeur du sapin... I always make a natural christmas tree, with lots of natural decoration, and angels!!So I do have to wait one or two weeks before christmas celebration.....

we take the kids and go to a christmas tree farm, where we select the just-right tree (which is always a white pine) and hubby cuts it down. then we drink hot cocoa by the bonfire at the tree farm, take our tree home and put it up. that's my favorite.

lovely photos...

just loving your use of red in everything! you capture it beautifully...you're a girl after my own heart, as i'm also all about how i'm going to package gift before i think of the gift!

those shadows are so cool! and i can smell the evergreens already:) i just love this time of year and decorating as you know. i especially love the lights, candles, and colors. one of our traditions- christmas eve, aside from opening new pajamas, we have a special white stocking. this stocking is for Christ, and everyone writes down their "gifts" for him, or things they will do in the upcoming year, like be more patient, read from the scripture more, do an act of service every week etc.. every year when you pull out the prior years gifts you are reminded of the spirit of giving and love that one hopes is the center of the season.

your images are divine. I agree with amy, this is bliss indeed.
oh, I have so many favorites...
I love getting our tree and decorating it and I love the first night of Hannukah when we light that first candle...we have an interfaith home so we have double the fun. I also love the night that we first exchange gifts and go out alone to celebrate the holidays in our own way.
:)

My favorite thing about preparing for the holidays is climbing up the rickity old ladder and lifting the attic panel to reveal boxes of beautiful decorations. We always seem to sift through all the memories while we're up there. Like my mother's wedding dress wrapped in tissue paper in a box. And drawings from my childhood tucked away in newspaper. It's nice to talk of memories from years ago.
