night & the city
i miss walking at night in the city, for some reason here i don't. in montreal you would walk for hours up down the streets same in england, japan and i will not even begin to tell about the night walks in paris. I love looking around i like the air in the evening, the sounds and the lights. I like that people, they seem happier in the evening, you could tell by their laughter perhaps it the red shoes they are wearing or the dress they have been dying to show off or perhaps it is the jeans and t-shirt they could not wait to slip into. for some reason you could hear clearer in the evening- the sounds of dinner being eaten -glass and silverware , not to mention cultures emerging- salsa from that place over there you can hear it loud and clear as the door opens to welcome new patrons, hip hop from that decked out car, jazz from the piano bar at the red hotel, girls singing "girls just want at have fun" at the top of their lungs clearly having the time of their lives...but my favorite sound of all might surprise you okay one of my favorites( my favorites is when i come across a peruvian band bustling)
...it is the the sound of the last train pulling out of the city, the buses decompressing and the street sweeper, well sweeping because that is when i know the city is all mine with the exception of a few like minded people and the ones who make the city streets their home for us that is when the city is ours just before the hussle & bussle of the daytime light.

Beautiful. I could almost hear the tempo of the city by night. There is nothing sweeter than balmy summer night air on the skin as you wander through the city. It is so full of possibilities. In the area I live in, there isn't such thing, so I know what you mean about missing it.
is bachelor paul flirting with you :-)
so well written. i love cities at night - especially really late, when everything feels so muted...
oh, you're killing me with this post! walking around at night is so sublime, whether i'm alone or with company. i'm so much more relaxed and happy. i think you and the city reveal different sides at night.
This post makes me miss living in the city sooo much. I love that time of night. When the city belongs to you. Yes.
i miss cities at night too. bilbao at night is beautiful... by the river and the guggenheim... i never get to enjoy nights anymore. maybe soon again.
thanks you for bringing us such beautiful words and images nadia.
i remember walking from one end of manhattan to the other one evening... i miss it too.
so beautiful nadia...i feel the same way--it is a way to feel a city more intimately rather than to see it. you experience it's real essence at night, it's true...
i will think of you in Paris on Nuit Blanche in october!
Please come walk in NY with me!
Found you via "hidden in france" -- wonderful blog -- wondeful photos!!

Oh just takes my breath away. This is why I can't wait to move back to the East Coast. You just can't that kind of experience anywhere.
I love this post...I take most of my walks at night.
I hardly ever go for walks at night......maybe I should sometime?! Sounds very appealing the way you describe it :)
Some places you walk in the city... other places you don't... like in L.A. we have the song Nonbody Walks in L.A. Although that is starting to change in some areas with the loft population increasing.
We lived in Boston for a month... we walked everyday... everywhere... back home in the L.A. area... we NEVER walk anywhere... I miss walking somewhere!
Love your post!
wonderful descriptions, i could feel it all! love the glow of those lights
it's as if i were shuffling along right beside you. fantastic post!
Sounds like a lovely time - great photos too. Oh the girls just having fun!
How true, how true. The last train out. The first train starting up. The last echo of steps, the last shadow . . . .
You've evoked the feel beautifully.
I love walking downtown on the old cobbled streets at night or very early morning when everyone is still asleep. Beautiful image and poetry.
A genuine post. I feel much the same... I miss my evening walks too.
The most beautiful post...I could see the words you were writing. Montreal has a wonderful walk-in-the-night culture, especially in the spring. Same in Victoria on Vancouver Island, and Vancouver City itself. Here in Calgary, no, it's too cold, it's not a night town. And Paris, oh my, I used to live in Paris as a child and I remember my parents walking around enjoying the night scene. I totally bonded with this post.
lovely , nadia!
